The European Smoketree is a rustic shrub that can grow in different environments, as it is not very demanding. It mostly grows in thickets and it colonizes steep calcareous terrains. The leaves are rich in tannin and used for tanning leather. The timber is used for small craftsmanship works. The “Royal Purple” cultivar is a very popular garden-created variety that sports both leaves and flowers/fruits of an intense purple color.
